✂️ Collection as Teacher—From Touchboard to Detachable Skirt
Editorial note:
These works has been created in the context of the Bauhaus Open Studios programme with students from Cornell College of Human Ecology’s Department of Human Centered Design (studio lead: Catherine Kueffer Blumenkamp) in spring 2024. Students were asked to select an object from CF+TC, create a touchboard as in the preliminary course at the Bauhaus and then develop their own design based on this material analysis.
Our coat project drew inspiration from archival pieces, resulting in a design that included a detachable skirt panel fastened with hook and eye closures. Throughout the process, we encountered challenges, particularly in aligning the fabric and perfecting the detachable feature. However, our collaboration enabled us to overcome these hurdles, allowing our individual styles to complement each other harmoniously. As we persevered through setbacks, we learned valuable lessons about the importance of innovation and teamwork in the realm of fashion design. Ultimately, our dedication and creativity culminated in a masterpiece that seamlessly merged tradition with contemporary flair.
Pola Levy is from Miami, Florida and a freshman at Cornell University studying Fashion Design in the school of Human Ecology. Pola has been sewing for nine years and can’t wait to thrive and become the best designer that she can be. Gabrielle Moore is a fashion design major, too.
